X-Men Meets Blade? Now you’ve got this SUPERhero-packed UF with L.D. Rose!

Did you know my birthday is right around the corner???  Did ya? Did ya?  I’m hoping to celebrate with a book release… hint hint… nudge nudge.  In the meantime, here’s a book review that I’ve been DYING to do!!!

I’ve got fellow FF&P & NECRWA member, L.D. Rose, stopping by with her debut novel, RELEASING THE DEMONS.

L.D. Rose is a neurotic physician by day, crazed writer by night, and all around wannabe superhero. She writes paranormal romance and urban fantasy, but she’s been known to delve into horror, sci-fi, and medical suspense on occasion. Girl gets dark, okay, just let it happen. L.D. Rose is a member of the RWA, FF&P, NEC-RWA and CoLoNY. She currently lives in Rhode Island with her studly hubby, her hyperactive boxer, and her two devious cats.

Onto the review…

I WAS PROVIDED A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW (but in the interest of full disclosure, I got to beta this b*tch!)
So, starting with the title of today’s post: think X-Men meets Blade… and you’ve got the Knights. Yeah… Now you feel that action-packed, superhero awesomeness that makes this dark fantasy so much more than a typical PNR? That’s what I thought. Seriously my friends, the title of this book says it all: RELEASING THE DEMONS does just that.

Blaze Knight is a hybrid-vampire with some sick pyrotechnic abilities, and he doesn’t ride solo. He’s got a band of brothers, all hybrids—all with their own special abilities. Are you feeling the X-men vibe? To top it all off, they’re holed up in mansion that would make Bruce Wayne mess his pants. I mean seriously, if these guys don’t get your motor running, then you need to seek professional help. I’m not gonna say who my favorite is *coughs*Rome*coughs* but dammit it all if Rose isn’t making me wait for the end of the series for his story. 😉  Love me a good mind-f***er.

Let’s just set these Knights aside for one minute… Just one, I promise! Blaze’s story not only introduces us to the boys, but also to a post-vampire apocalypse NYC. These bloodsuckers are just what you’ve read of in your favorite ghost stories, and the boys are damn good at hunting them down. Blaze, being one of the younger hybrids, headstrong and cocky, finds himself suffering from PTSD after being abducted and tortured by the vamps. Blaze is somewhat lost until he meets and equally headstrong vampire detective who helps him “release his demons” if you know what I mean. It doesn’t take long for Valerie Medeiros (let’s hear it for Portagee nation!!!) to find her niche inside the Knights’ operation. And well, I think you get the gist of it.

True to her clinical background, Rose is a very technical writer. You can tell she takes her time, researches her topics, and executes each scene with calculated precision. No doubt, every book to come in this series will be chock full of bad-assery and heart-pumping action.

The doctor is in!

  1. We both love vampires, and they are definitely HOT in the industry. Please tell us a little bit about what sparked your inspiration for the premise of this book and the series as a whole, and how do you feel you’ve put your own spin on the subject of vampires?

As for the inspiration for RtD, this entire series has been in my head for a very long time! I used to participate in roleplaying games in high school and college (yep, total geekery) and I used to create character profiles all the time. My six boys for the Order of the Senary popped up in a slightly different manner then, but the overall gist was the same—six genetically engineered half-vampire mercenaries created by the U.S. military to take out vampires in a pseudo-post apocalyptic NYC. Each of these fellas has their own superpower(s) due the dramatic side effects of species hybridization with both physical and mental manifestations. I love stories with some element of romance in them so I had to hook each of these boys up with a special lady, and my muse pretty much took off with the idea and ran with it.

What makes this series different from other vampire books is that the vast majority of the vampires in these novels are just that—monsters. They’re ruthless predators who won’t hesitate to tear out throats and rip each other apart. I’ve stuck with the traditional lore of vampires but in an alternate-present setting. No sunlight, no reflections, anaphylaxis to silver and wood (although only one specific type of wood), inability enter people’s homes without an invitation (or holy structures, period)—all the stuff I loved about vampires as a kid. Some of them carry a more human edge than others and my goal is to make my reader sympathize with a creature they should be terrified of.

  1. What other projects do you have lined up?

I just finished the second book in The Order of the Senary series, BLACK BULLET, and it’s currently undergoing revision. The third book in the series, BEAUTIFUL LIAR, is half-written. I also have two more series planned, one involving UF versions of fairy tales (the first is called HEADS WILL ROLL, a dark spin on Alice in Wonderland) and another historical UF series involving two depression-era gangsters who end up as demon hunters.

(JC: uber cool, can’t wait!)

  1. If you could have dinner with any of your characters, who would they be? (you may pick more than one)

All my Senary boys. All together in a pub eating burgers and drinking beer. Maybe playing some pool or darts. Yeah. 😀

(JC: okay, my turn… so Rome, Dax, and I… wait :/ I’m gonna keep that thought to myself)

  1. Is there a book that has made a lasting impact or an influence on you?

“IT” by Stephen King. The way King depicts the darkest parts of humanity (via the supernatural) and our childhood fears coming to life is just magnificent. I’m forever traumatized by that book!

(JC: Creepy)

  1. If you could live in any other time when might that be?

The Roaring Twenties, most definitely! Women started to come out of their shells and I loved their rebellious movement. Not to mention the fedoras and gangsters! *swoon* Also, jazz, cars and penicillin. 😉

(JC: I can totally see you as a flapper) 😉

  1. What’s currently playing on your iPod/CD player/music app?

I’ve created Spotify playlists for my books and I’ve been listening to my BLACK BULLET playlist pretty frequently to get back into the groove of revisions. Prominent bands on the list are the Deftones, Alice in Chains, Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Seether, Stonesour and Nine Inch Nails. 😀

(JC: ❤ Deftones… ❤ them so hard!)

And just for fun…

  1. Live without your phone? OR Live without your computer, iPod, and clean clothes?

Live without my phone. Sometimes I want to throw it against a wall, anyway! LOL. I could do everything I do on my phone with a computer and iPod. 😉

  1. Be a vampire? OR Be a werewolf?

Vampire, of course! I already barely see daylight, haha. I just imagine vampires as dark, dangerous and super intelligent. Who wouldn’t want to be that? And who needs sunlight, anyway? 😉

  1. Receive $5 a day for the rest of your life? OR Receive $50,000 right here, right now?

50K right now! GIMME. *grabby hands* If I had $5 a day, I would spend it in an instant. I’d probably spend the 50K too, LOL, but at least it would be on something useful. 😉

Here’s a few questions for Valerie:

  1. What did you dream of becoming as a little girl?

After my sister died, I always knew I wanted to be a cop. Before then? A superhero. Close enough. 😉

  1. What keeps you motivated?

Being able to save one person’s life—just a single life—keeps me going. It makes all of the danger, fear, and horror worth it. That, and coffee. Lots of coffee.

(JC: Oh, coffee… I hear that!)

  1. Time-warp, you’ve saved NYC from vampires, now what?

Sleep? Haha! Honestly, I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself. I’d probably still run around the streets, looking for trouble.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 10-15 years?

What a question! I tend not to think that far ahead. Definitely with Blaze and the guys, but if the world is the way it is now, I certainly wouldn’t bring a life into it. I’d probably still be doing the same thing, hunting vampires and burying them in the ground where they belong…I just might just be slower at it!

And now a few for Blaze:

  1. Do you feel as though you’ve been cheated out of a “normal” life?

*laughs* What’s a normal life? You can’t be cheated out of something you know nothing about. But yeah, sometimes I wonder what it would’ve been like to have parents and a home. Even to just go to school as a normal kid, college, all that kosher human shit. But you can’t miss something you never had, and I’m thankful to be where I am now.

  1. What’s a mellow day in your home like? Are you guys lounging around shirtless? *drools*

Can’t say we have many mellow days, but I can tell you Dax is always shirtless, haha. We all tend to get together and spend time with one another, since we’re usually separated during the sweeps. Maybe play a game of pool or football, spar, goof off, whatever.

(JC: Dax shirtless? YUM!! I’m inviting myself over for dinner)

  1. Every experience shapes a man (hopefully for the better), what do you think you would be like if you hadn’t suffered such tragedy in your life?

*suddenly looks uncomfortable* I try not to think about it much, but what I went through at Grand Central definitely changed me—for the worst initially, but I’m getting better (or at least, that’s what I keep telling myself). I see things differently now and I’m not quick to judge. I’ve done a lot of things I regret—things I should’ve been terminated for—but I got a second chance (and third, fourth, and maybe fifth, ha). I don’t think I would’ve been so forgiving then, definitely not as forgiving as my brothers were with me.

  1. Same question, where do you see yourself in 10-15 years?

Hopefully not dead. *laughs* I don’t even think about tomorrow, never mind a decade into the future. I’m just my biding time since I should’ve died in that pit underground. Me being alive now is a bonus.

Finally, L.D.: What words of encouragement can you offer fellow writers?

Write what you love. Seriously. Don’t write for the market, cause it’ll show in your work. It’s easy to tell when an author is passionate about what they’re writing just by small nuances in their stories. And as a reader, I’m more invested and engaged if there’s some fire behind the words. As for promo, just be yourself, interact with your readers and fellow writers as much as you can, and don’t forget to write the next book!

Thanks so much for having me, J.C.! Hopefully your readers were somewhat entertained by my visit. 🙂

(JC: It’s always amazing to celebrate successes with friends. Cheers to L.D.!)

Welcome to Sawtooth Shifters!

Off the shifter hook with this indie POWERHOUSE!

Deadly Ever After

Hey Everyone! You may have noticed I was a little quiet all summer with releases. You know it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. I’m excited to reveal what I’ve been up to. Meet the wolves of Sawtooth Forest and the ladies of Forever Home Animal Shelter.

sawtooth combined first 3

The Channing and Lowe packs have been captured by one of their own, and forced to fight each other in a dog fighting ring. Trina and the ladies from Forever Home rescue them, but the wolves aren’t the only ones in recovery.

With Sawtooth Shifters, I wanted to write strong, realistic women who were starting their lives over. They’ve all been through some serious shit and it would be just as easy for them to retreat and let the bad stuff win. I want them to triumph.

The wolves have something to fight for too. Their future. All the female…
